Google toeing the photo-sharing waters with Pool Party

Google has been rolling out an array of new services this week, most recently being their social effort, called Google+. Now it is rumored that they've been developing a photo sharing service named Pool Party.

Android has long lacked a photo sharing app that has been able to grab the masses like Instagram does on iOS. Lightbox is the most recent app to come around and is the one most likely to fill that void. However, if these rumors about Pool Party are correct, a photo sharing app from Google will likely have incredible traction.

Here is what is known about Pool Party thus far:

• It is being developed within Google by the Slide team
• The developers are giving a strong emphasis to group albums or 'pools' that display photos in real-time
• It is currently in beta mode and is invite-only
• It is listed both in the Android Market and in the iOS App Store

While it is available in the Market and will download to your device, you won't be able to sign up without an email "approved" by the developers; that is, have an invitation from someone who is already a user.

Much is still unknown about Pool Party, but the concept of a photo sharing app developed by Google is extremely intriguing and one that I would love to try out. The link to the app after the break. But unless you're in on the beta, you'll be left high and dry.

Droid 3 accessories leaked in inventory list

While you're waiting for official word about the Motorola Droid 3, and tired of looking longingly at the Motorola Milestone 3, you can start thinking about what accessories you'll be picking up.  This leaked list from Verizon includes the inductive charging battery door, a 1930mAh extended battery, and a pair of docks -- one for multimedia and one for your car. 

Nothing we can do to hurry it to market, (July 13 anyone?) but it's nice to see that some accessories should be available, hopefully on day one.

We've seen this sort of preposterousness before from BigBen, and we're no closer to falling in love now than we were back in 2009. This behemoth allows you to get the full experience in the console's Cyber Cycling Sports title, and the feeling of actually accomplishing something in the process? A presumably marketable side effect. The updated Cyberbike Magnetic Edition is available in North America this time around, relying on -- surprise, surprise -- magnetic resistance to offer a costly workout for those under 286 pounds. This oversized peripheral is available now for $199.99 (bike and game combo), which puts it a bit too far above the cost of an actual console ($150) for us to consider giving it a shot. Plus, we've already committed to biking downtown for our eventual Wii U pickup -- and frankly, that's enough to cover our yearly workout quota.

ANSYS Acquires Apache Design Solutions For $310 Million In Cash

ANSYS, which offers simulation software and technologies designed to optimize product development processes, has agreed to acquire Apache Design Solutions, a simulation software provider for low power solutions in the electronics industry. The purchase price is approximately $310 million in cash. The price includes an estimated $29 million in cash on Apache's balance sheet. ANSYS intends to fund the transaction with cash on-hand from the combined organization. The agreement also includes retention provisions and incentives for certain members of management and employees, earned over a three year period, including an additional $13 million of performance equity awards.

Opera 11.10 gets HTML5 File API support, IMAP improvements

The crew in Oslo keeps plugging away at Opera 11.10, and the latest snapshot build includes a number of improvements to Opera's built-in email client -- as well as HTML5-related additions.

On the IMAP front, Opera now supports special folders like sent items, spam, and trash. It also better handles duplicate items in Gmail -- such as those which appear in all mail and under your custom labels.

Opera 11.10 now partially supports the HTML5 File API as well, which means your favorite Web apps (like Gmail) may soon begin adding Opera to the list of supported browsers.

You can download the latest Opera 11.10 snapshot for Windows, Mac, or Linux from the official release post.

Robert Morris, Computer Security Expert, Dead At 78

Robert Morris, a security expert and father of Robert Tappan Morris, the creator of the Morris Worm, died near his home in Lebanon, N.H. of complications due to dementia. Morris spent almost a decade as chief scientist for the National Security Agency and was instrumental in the first cyberattack against Saddam Hussein's Iraqi Army in 1991. Morris was also worked at building tools and systems for Unix research group at Bell Laboratories and laying the groundwork for the Internet as we know it.

Add a Windows 8 user tile to your Windows 7 taskbar

Now that Windows 8 images have begun leaking out, it's only a matter of time until developers start releasing mods for Windows 7 which mimic upcoming features. Over at Into Windows, they've spotted one such mod already.

In the earliest Windows 8 images, we saw Windows Live integration on the taskbar. In the far right corner, there's a user tile displayed. If you'd like to do the same on Windows 7, download Taskbar User Tile from DeviantArt user AngelWZR.

Once installed, your current picture will appear on the taskbar. Click it, and a menu appears which allows you to log off, switch users, and access the control panel. Right now, the mod only works if your taskbar is displayed on the bottom of your Windows desktop.

Mozilla publishes name and shame list of slow Firefox add-ons, cracks down on tardy devs

Mozilla, continuing its year-long crusade to speed up Firefox startup and shutdown times, has published a name and shame list of the Firefox's slowest add-ons.

The list is just one part of Mozilla's new efforts to highlight slow add-ons, and to help developers make their add-ons more efficient. Over the next two weeks, 'slow performance warnings' will be introduced in the add-on gallery so that users can see, before installation, which add-ons will slow down their browser. If that isn't enough to spur developers into cleaning up their add-ons, Mozilla has also begun reaching out to developers of slow add-ons with tips on how to improve add-on performance. Finally, add-on developers will soon have the ability to perform 'on-demand performance testing,' so that they can test their add-on before it's deployed publicly.

Mozilla reports that the average Firefox add-on slows down Firefox's start-up time by 10% -- which means, if you install 10 add-ons, you will double your start-up time. On fast desktop PCs that kind of slowdown might be negligible, but on older computers, laptops and smartphones, it could be the difference between a 5 and 10 second startup. Mozilla has obviously realized that while massive performance gains might've been made with Firefox 4, the addition of third-party add-ons can destroy any user-perceived improvements.

In other news, Mozilla says that a future build of Firefox will block the installation of add-ons (such as toolbars) by third-party software. Add-ons and toolbars that are bundled in this way will require explicit approval when you next open up Firefox. Hooray!
